Além de pessoas, contempla também empresas e sites. Existem três tipos de certificados digitais, cada um deles com uma finalidade diferente ao substituir a assinatura não digital. São eles o e-CNPJ, o e-CPF e a NF-e.  O e-CNPJ, por exemplo, permite que uma pessoa responsável assine em nome da empresa. Já o e-CPF permite uma série de ações à pessoa física, como assinatura de contratos, procurações e o envio de informações aos órgãos oficiais, entre outros.
